You will learn why thoughts, emotions, and behaviours generated by the Chimp and Computer do not define who you are. Understanding this distinction is the foundation of The Chimp Model and reduces unnecessary self criticism.
Finding Yourself
Being the Real You
ABOUT THIS COURSE
This short course explains a central idea in The Chimp Model: separating who you are from the Chimp and Computer systems in your mind. Professor Steve Peters shows how hijacks can distort your view of yourself and teaches a simple exercise to help you define the real you and guide how you want to think, feel, and behave in everyday moments.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
These short, practical sessions give you clear explanations and tools you can use in everyday life. Learn at your own pace while developing emotional skills that help you think clearly, respond calmly, and be the real you.
Steve introduces the “Do I want?” question as a practical tool to identify when the machine has taken over. This allows you to pause and respond rather than react.
Through the blank piece of paper exercise, you define the characteristics of the person you genuinely want to be. This clarifies your identity and provides a stable reference point.
Understand why hijacks can distort your perception of yourself and lead to harsh self-judgement. Learn how to separate the machine’s behaviour from your real self so you can reset more effectively.
Define how you want to think, feel, and act when difficult situations arise. This gives you a simple framework to reset yourself and return to the mindset of your real self.
